The Pomio District
The Pomio District is one of WWF's newest project sites, with a new office launched in Palmalmal in late 2024. Located in New Britain in Papua New Guinea, the Pomio District is home to vast areas of pristine rainforests, diverse and unique flora and fauna, and people rich in traditional local knowledge and complex traditions. However, the area is also threatened by increasing development, palm oil plantations and associated deforestation and overuse of natural resources.
WWF will work hand-in-hand with and guided by the local communities to enhance their existing conservation initiatives and support a wider management approach for the region by bringing all relevant stakeholders together.
